Birthday, Brew, Blog Bash
It’s my birthday, and it’s not just any regular birthday it’s my Champagne birthday. The jury’s out on the real name for this type of birthday: Champagne, Platinum, Golden, and Beddian (yes, Beddian.) I’m going with Champagne birthday because, well you know, champagne! So what is a champagne birthday? It’s the year you turn the same year of your birth. For example, I was born in 1959, and I am turning 59 this year!
There are so many things happening this Golden year that my husband Jeff and I decided to throw a party called Birthday, Brew, Blog Bash! As you can see from the title, the party has many aspects, and one of them is the launch of this blog, Inside Out – Confidence from the inside out at any age.
The Inside Out blog is devoted to inspiring others to achieve their personal best from the inside out at any age.
While pondering my upcoming 59th birthday, I realized that I consider myself in halftime of life. Many of you are thinking, “Ok Kim, 59 isn’t really halftime.” Yes, it’s true I probably won’t live until 119, but I’m a glass half full kind of gal.
Just like halftime in a football game, halftime of life is a time for some fun, rest, reassessment of the game plan and recharging for the 2nd half.
In the book Half Time, Moving from Success to Significance by Bob Buford, halftime is introduced as a time to make a second-career shift from “success to significance” through a “halftime” transition.
After writing the book, the author founded the Halftime Institute, where people actually study and learn concepts for moving from success to significance. It’s just like going back to school again but without the pimples and proms.
The focus of my halftime transition is all about making an impact and finishing well.
My goal is to inspire and serve others by:
- Lifting up leaders
- Empowering others to achieve their personal best
- Serving both locally and globally
- Showing people of all ages that beauty comes from the inside out
So what about my first half? Thanks for asking! I married my high school sweetheart, Jeff Russell. We have two amazing grown sons.
I am currently Mayor Pro-Tem for the city of Rochester, Michigan; Christian servant leader and a Rodan and Fields Consultant.
Community means the world to us and serving our hometown is the highest honor. Jeff served on the City of Rochester School board for seven years, and I have been on the Rochester City Council for the last eight years. From balancing budgets, reducing taxes, to serving on boards and commissions, I represent the citizens of our great city of Rochester with honor and respect.
My husband and I own a manufacturing plant that has been in our family for generations. In 1997, we moved our plant to Rochester, and it’s still going today. To learn more about me go to my About page.
Finally, why the Brew in the Birthday, Brew, Blog Bash? Jeff loves to brew his craft beers in what we call the “Red Shed.” The Red Shed is a small building next to our manufacturing plant. You’ll see a few pictures of me in front of the Red Shed throughout the website.
We’ve just started gifting our friends and family with “wedding brew.” Jeff, also known as “The Wedding Brewer” works with the couple to custom-make their craft beer to be served at the reception.
Jeff’s crafting operation is called “The Fifth Ingredient.” All in all, beer contains only four ingredients: Water, Yeast, Grain, and Malt. Jeff adds one more element to the recipe; the fifth ingredient is Love. On each box of craft beer, Jeff writes the following verse from 1st Corinthians 13:7
[Love]… It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 1st Corinthians 13:7
I’ll be posting more soon about the fun we’re having with Wedding Brew!
I encourage you to think about your halftime regardless if you are in the second quarter, halftime or second half. I hope that this blog inspires you to make an impact, gives you the confidence to pursue your passions, and realize that you are beautiful from the inside out.
Thank you for reading and celebrating my Golden birthday with me.
